In the past, I've noticed when we backing out of our driveway, the rear parking sensors flash red, when there's no danger of scraping the ground. The front sensors also pick up parking curbs.
Yesterday, the rears trigged an auto stop when we were part of the way in the street, which caused a hazardous situation with cross traffic.
The sensors "see" things lower than needed, including the road itself. I wish my old Prius Prime had that problem as we scraped that one a LOT.
Are there adjustments for the sensors so they don't see things just a few inches off the ground?
I have a service appointment for next week. We had been ignoring the problem, but after the car dead stopped us in cross traffic it's a safety issue now.

Thanks,
A few days ago when backing out at Publix a lady came around the corner with her cart w/o looking after I was already moving backwards. The car stopped violently so fast I briefly thought I'd hit something hard LOL. After that, I'll take the hard stops knowing the car is watching out for 'anything' in it's path if you don't indicate you're aware. I'm not sure though if there is an adjustment for that or if I'd even want it. I bet if you're foot is on the brake when you're backing out that won't happen. But I can't see your personal situation so maybe you do need an adjustment if it can be done.
This hasn't happened again recently. Maybe the update fixed it? I wish the car would tell me when there's been an update. I do see an August one listed, but why doesn't it tell me about the latest and greatest?
The app even worked when I charged at an EA station a couple days ago. What a shock that was!
Well, I spoke too soon. It happened again yesterday later afternoon. It's very jarring and hurt my wife's back last night.
It seems to happen after the rear-cross traffic was activated and I slow down leaving the driveway (after the car passes). It's doesn't seem to be an issue if there's no cross traffic and if we back out at a continuous pace.
But it's definitely he ground that shows up on the screen with the red bars right on the ground. We may yet have to go in to get it looked at.
Our driveway has a slight angle with the road, maybe 5°, but I've seen much steeper driveways compared to the road.
Is there a way to disable this? It happened again, to my wife this time as she left at 5am this morning to go to work.
No one else is having this problem?
On our 2022 XC60 (which I believe has the same interface that your XC40), touch the screen (with the camera view) and two buttons will come up: disable the beeping sensor and disable the auto-brake. I now always do it for the auto brake when leaving our sloped driveway.
If you don't see these buttons appear when you touch the screen while in reverse gear, you might need to factory reset. No guarantees it'll work, but I think the reset that I did (for a different purpose) also activated this feature for me. Maybe.
Well, it happened again, twice one after another today when backing out.
The RAB system seems to be extra sensitive after the rear cross traffic beeping is active. This time my cat was the passenger, but it's always a strong jolt, like we have hit something. I was hoping the trip to the dealer for service last week (I mentioned the problem) and/or the software update would fix it, but no!
Attached is a pic of where it halted our car the 2nd time around when I was trying to back out of our driveway. As you can see there's plenty of space above the ground and the ground is what has the red bar on the display. It's like the car thinks it's our old Prius Prime which would frequently scrape. Ironically, that car's sensors never warned us of such.
Let me see if there's any buttons on our screen. I don't remember seeing any. Does your XC60 have the Google interface? It's awful! I wish the XC40 P8 had the standard Volvo interface like I've had on the rental Volvos they have given me while our car is in the shop! At least it would have HD Radio as well.
Do I need to put the car in "off-road" mode? What does that do?
Plenty of clearance. I'm not going to hit the road!

This worked. Thank you! I touched the screen and the 3 buttons come up. The 3rd is for the camera. I can turn off RAB "for the drive." I wish the buttons would stay up to remind us since it's not blocking the camera view.
This is a workaround for now, but I'm sure we will forget at times and it's only a problem if we are going slowly after the cross traffic alert goes off. Weird.
Here's the latest on this saga. I emailed customer care (who initially refused email from my Gmail account - weird):
You will need to schedule an appointment with Volvo Cars Mission Viejo so we can proceed with reviewing your case. We would appreciate the opportunity to monitor the service appointment and keep you up to date with any news we find while your vehicle is being diagnosed.
Of course I already took it into the dealer before this and they simply loaded software version 1.7 which didn't fix the problem. I'm not that interested in taking the car in for the 4th time for service in 4 months, but next time RAB gets us, I'm sure I will be furious and dragging it in for a loaner yet again, sigh.
Volvo wants me to take it into the dealer again, but I already did that.
Anyway, I'm trying to back it in to the driveway now to see if that solves the problem. The last time RAB activated with the asphalt (Wed) it was before the parking sensors even said anything. Having to remember to turn it off each time isn't working so well.

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. Hope that the dealer finally can get it fixed.

First off, thank you for documenting the issues you are having with the RAB system. Although I am not yet a Volvo owner (C40 on order), I am attempting to learn about known issues and attempted solutions.
I believe you are driving a 2021 XC40. I accessed the on-line owner's manual for that vehicle (See link below) and saw a statement which read, "If a function is activated, you can also be notified of this via a text message in the instrument panel." I have attached a YouTube video which is advanced to the place in the video which show the text message. Are you seeing this text message?

Sorry to post again, but this topic has piqued my curiosity. I can understand why the dealer focused on the software version 1.7 as a fix since an adjustment to the RAB is identified in the release notes. (See link below.) Were you able to verify the upload was successful? I assume you can complete the verification via the steps outlined below.
One other note of interest. If you verified the message on the instrumentation panel read, "Automatic Intervention City Safety", then the YouTube video below might be of interest. I have advanced the video to the point where they address City Safety as being an intervention which cannot be turned off. However, the warning time can be customized too early, normal, or late. Have you attempted this adjustment?
Go to Systems>Software update>Release notes (at the very bottom of the "Your software is up to date" screen.) Scroll down to see update history. Does your software indicate v1.7?
It happened to me twice! Once, when I got too close to trash bins, and second time, when I was backing up near the bush in my driveway. Now I have PTSD from this auto-stop feature...need to disable it!
We back into our driveway, as the visibility when we depart isn't great due to trees, so it is safer for us to pull out. I have a rubber parking curb that is about 4" tall and the Volvo always stops with this just behind the bumper and then we can hit the gas to move it back the rest of the way. If we leave it where the Volvo thinks we should stop, the curb is underfoot when trying to load or unload anything in the cargo area. It is a bit annoying, but not a safety issue, so yeah, the sensors apparently don't want you backing over anything of any height including the road itself.
Since our driveway is fairly steep, I am guessing we might run into the same issue if we pull in and back out. Sorry, I don't have any solution other than maybe back in to your driveway.
