Default Updating the Software to Add Packages?

I'm asking about whether it's possible to upgrade/add software packages to the vehicle, like the adaptive cruise control and pilot assist.

The dealer thought we could but later said this can only be done at the factory. Since our car has all the hardware for it, why wouldn't they want to charge us more to add the features we want?

I guess I am expecting too much for 2021, but why not, if makers like Volvo want to keep up with the obvious competition on the software? 3 years is already looking like an eternity for cars, much like it used to be with computers and then smartphones.

I think many manufacturers, automobile and others, are not always in touch with what the needs are of their customers or potential customers. I've never understood when I have asked them to do something, auto and others, and willing to pay for it why they can not do it.

Agreed. They got me and I'm willing to pay $1,300 for a simple software upgrade that costs them almost nothing (the hardware is all already present). Well, it's their loss.

I don't think it necessarily has the hardware.

Understood, but it has the camera and buttons at least.

It probably uses a different hydraulic unit for the brakes

Maybe, but I guess it's a moot point for almost 3 years, since we are in a lease. Here's what Customer Care wrote me this morning. At least I can hope the collision system will engage if the cruise control tries to rear-end the vehicle in front of me, but I won't be testing that.
