Default XC60 Hybrid or pure mode and no heat?!

I have a 2019 XC60 R design T8 hybrid and unless I have the actual motor running I get zero heat. Am I missing something?! This is my first hybrid, but I would figure with a luxury car they’d have figured that out… help? Should I take it in?

We have a Subaru PHEV and it starts the engine when we need heat. The XC40 P8 works fine for heat for us, but it seems the Volvo PHEV's should start the engine as well, if heat is needed.

I have a 2021 XC60 Recharge and had the same issue the first time I drove it in cold weather when the drive mode was in PURE (the fully electric setting). This mode conserves energy and so the climate features are impacted. My car allows me to go into Settings and create Individual settings for each drive mode - I adjusted the Climate setting so the car will use the engine for heating, even in PURE mode, and it seems to be working. I also set it to AWD for winter driving so I don't have to rely on the car to sense the conditions and switch over (I live in snow country).

I believe the following instructions may work for your car - if not, try looking in your specific manual under Drive Mode. Good luck! It took me a while to figure this out, by the way .

Individual

  • Customizes drive mode to personal preferences.
Select one of the drive modes as a basis and adjust the settings to achieve your preferred driving characteristics. These settings will be stored in your driver profile.

Individual drive mode is only available if it has been activated in the center display.

Tap Settings in the Top view.

Tap My Car - Individual Drive Mode and select Individual Drive Mode.

Under Presets, select one of the following drive modes as a basis: Pure, Hybrid, Power or Polestar Engineered.

The following settings can be modified:
  • Driver Display
  • Steering Force
  • Powertrain Characteristics
  • Brake Characteristics
  • Suspension Control
  • ECO Climate
