Default 1998 volvo s40 1.8L cam timing

I have a 1998 s40. Just bought a new timing belt. Can someone give me a step by step procedure on how to do this job? I couldn't get my mechanic to do this because he doesn't have the time He just left it hanging. So i just plan to do it myself. Also does cylinder #1 need to be on TDC? Any help would be highly appreciated

The basic idea is to line up the timing marks on the cams and the crank. Then remove the old belt and replace with new. Because this engine is an interference engine, when the timing marks are lined up all the pistons are down in the bores.

The European version of the Haynes Manual will guide you if you can find one. I have the North American 1.9L turbo S40 version and the Euro Haynes Manual is the only one available for us with 2000-2004 models. It covers your 1.8L version.

Did it break while driving it?

it didn't break. When he was suppose to change the belt he didn't finish the job. he just removed the old belt.

Just don't try to spin the engine with the starter. The 1.9L engine is an interference engine and, if the 1.8L is also, then you might bend some valves. Are the cam timing marks lined up? Crank mark lined up? Then it's a matter of slipping the new belt on and tightening the tensioner. However, the cams tend to move when the belt is off due to the valve spring pressure. You might have to move them slightly to get the marks aligned.

Your mechanic took the car in for a timing belt job, removed the belt and then decided he didn't have time?

That is ridiculous.
