Default 2000 S40 Engine

Good Day Everyone. I currently own a 2000 Volvo S40 2ltr Non Turbo.

I just want to query, what other engines will fit into thos vehicle as I do want to change the current engine as I believe the mechanic that worked on it messed up the timing. To add to that, the VVT gear is leaking oil & since it's a part that's been discontinued by Volvo, it's next to impossible to find one.

Please advise

Thank you kindly.

In the US, the gen 1 S40s used the 1.9T (B4204Tx) from 2000 to 2004. I believe in other markets the same was used in 98-99. There are a few variances ie T2, T3, T4 but that's mostly for emission variations - the blocks will be the same. If your timing belt failed and you messed up the head, that can be fixed (new exhaust valves etc). If you want to search for a replacement, try car-part.com which is a search engine for North American recycle yards. You should be able to find a replacement VVT gear - start by finding the Volvo part number using a Volvo web store like Tasca Parts, then google, or you can try a Volvo friendly web store like FCP Euro, EEuro Parts or IPD USA. Personally, I'd only pull the engine if it were burning oil - say due to bad rings or cylinder walls. Plenty of posts on how to do the R+R on the S40 VVT so try doing a thread search as well.
