In the next 2 weeks I will be changing my V40s timing belt as I have no service records of the car and the belt looks aged (see pictures), the car has 161,200 miles on it. Now on every forum and youtube videos to get the timing belt off you have to remove the passenger side engine mount and to do that you have to jack up the engine slightly for support using a 2X4 and a jack with the 2X4 corner to corner on the oil pan. Is this safe and is it possible to just remove the engine mount without jacking or will the engine just fall? AllData says to use a engine lift but I don't have the money for that. Also during this week I have to drive about 20 Miles a day at a max of 60MPH do you think the belt will hold up? I turned on my cameras flash so the cracks look worse than they are i can rub my finger over the belt and it feels smooth.

 

You need to support the engine when removing the mount.

 

Thats what I thought, looks like I need to find a 2X4, do you think the belt will last another week?

Great point, I'm pushing my luck so tomorrow I'm going to do it, "fun". I guess $40 now and 3 hours wasted is better than sending it to the junk yard because I was lazy.

 

Because there is very few timing belt tutorials and only one YouTube video for this car I might have my friend take a video of the process.

 

$40? I wouldn't do just the belt... And I'd be hesitant to use cheap aftermarket parts.

 

Buy a kit and replace everything. All the pulleys, tensioner, water pump... a little more $ and you can be worry free for probably the life of the car after that.

Also there is a VERY good chance that your VVT gear is leaking. Make sure to look for any signs of oil on and around the TB.

 

After 4 hours of work today I installed the timing belt, the VVTs were dry and because of limited money I'll put money aside to replace the water pump and pully this spring when I can use the auto shop at my high school as I have limited and crapy tools.

 

It is often the tensioner or idler that fails, not the belt. They are all due to be replaced at the same time. So hopefully they last until spring.
