Default 2000 Volvo S40

I recently came into possession of a 2000 Volvo S40 2.0 Non Turbo. I have noticed that she now leaks coolant whilst idling, draining the coolant reservoir in under 2 minutes and causing the car engine to feel extremely hot however, the temperature Guage does not go passed the halfway mark.

The leak looks like it's from the thick pipeline situated under the engine, running in towards the back of the engine(I can't really see ad it's covered).

I was wondering if anyone had this issue before or, what it could possibly be. I haven't driven the car since I got it as a result.

there's not a lot of things involved in the S40s cooling system. There's a lower radiator hose (fat pipe that goes from the radiator to block (google Volvo Part 30741660) that sounds like your problem. You'll probably need to remove the lower shroud to see both ends.

I really appreciate this response. Yes that is the exact hose I am speaking about. I'm trying to upload a picture & it's not loading for some reason & yes, the water seems to be dripping from the back(I'm assuming this is where the hose goes into the block). Almost impossible to see from the top, so will definitely have to jack her up & look at this from underneath.

Its a 22 year old car so most of the rubber houses will be past their prime , best to replace them all , when one fails it will be soon that some other fails and when you are driving and a hose breaks your engine is gone the temp sensor will not show it as there will be no fluid

Thank you kindly. Yes indeed, I do intend to replace all rubber hoses

usually the most common hose to fail is the upper radiator hose - right where the nipple is that goes to the coolant overflow tank. As part of the overall R+R you may want to also do the thermostat and the reservoir fill cap (it doubles as a pressure release safety valve so make sure you get the OEM part). If you do the upper hose, the thermostat cover is just two torx screws - plus you'll see the ECT sensor right below it (again an easy replace when those parts are out of the way) which is something else you may consider refreshing. Note that the S40 Gen1s are prone to trapping air on the refill - there's a bleed valve to help finish the job.
