2000 volvo s40 turbo 1.9l new to volvos need help help
just bought this car for my daughter and the temp was warm when i bought it. i took it to get tires on it at the service center and had them run diagnostics on it and the only codes that came on then were for the cvvt which is leaking oil and the oxygen sensors. sense been about 2 weeks and had first cold snap, we then encountered a no crank no start condition, with the flashing arrow. i did some research and the pnp switch kept coming come so we replaced it. the car immediately started up in park and neutral drove fine but when we did this the weather was warm 50 ish, the car has been driving fine then this weekend temp dropped to 27 degrees and had the same no start no crank condition, the geatr shift button felt like it was sticking a little and i sprayed some silicone in there, the, but the car never did start, the next day temp was about 5o ish and my wife started it up with no problems but she did have the flashing arrow. drove it for 2 -3 days and was fine. i drove it to work tonight to have a mechanic to verify we were ordering the right cvvt and the car started on all three of my breaks at work. then this morning it was below 30 and had the same problem again. we ran it the gear shift back and forth a quite a phew times tapped on relays checked fuses, tapped on starter and nothing. stuck in south carolina all iput appreciated

I had a cranking problem with my 2000 S40, if it was colder (40s-50s) it would crank forever before starting, but if the car was warm it wasn't nearly as long. It turned out to be my fuel pressure regulator. I purchased the car in the last 3 months and chaned the regulator right away so I don't know what it would have done in the cold. It isn't a cheap fix, about $200, if you can do the work yourself.
I have no idea if this is the same problem, but when I bought my car it was throwing similar codes, nothing that directly pointed to the FPR.

When the gear shift button sticks the problem is at the base of the shifter, not the top part with the button. Notice where the cup holder is located right above the shifter? Drinks will spill and leak down onto the base area causing the solenoid at the base to stick. To fix this you remove part of the plastic surrounding the shifter base and spray some lube on the solenoid and shifter linkage. Pull up the rubber mat under the radio. Use an allen wrench or similar to lift the plastic piece that allows access to the shifter linkage.
