Default 2001 S40 Accident

I rear-ended an SUV at about 20-25MPH in rush hour traffic. That sucked, but this is a great car to be in an accident with apparently.

Anyone want to guess how much damage? It did $517 of damage to the Honda Pilot it rearended (rear bumper scratched).

I say it looks worse than it is. It seems that it only needs the bodywork done. If you are going to replace the hood, thats the major expense. I think its $800 from the dealer with the discounts. I say you are looking a little over a $1000.

I have full collision. The book value of this car is $6900, the adjusted value is $5400, and the damage... (drum roll) is $4900. Progressive Insurance has totaled the car. I'm going to argue with them a bit on the $5400 part, but looks like it's time for a new Volvo!

It's not just the hood it looks like it's the fender also. There is probably damage behind the headlight area (newer Volvo's don't have that fiberglass header panel). Let's see the list of items Patrickh. I would say that it can be repaired for a lot less then $4900. I'm thinking $2500 is more reasonable. You need to get a another quote and I would look into fixing it yourself if the damage to the area inside the engine compartment is minimal.

I don't have the list on me I'm going to try to get the adjustment paperwork tomorrow morning. They mentioned the A/C was severely damaged, radiator needed to be replaced, and several other mechanical items. It is curious though that they offered me $100 off my deductible to not repair the bumper and then totaled the car out 18 hours later (after I said um, no).

I'm looking at slightly used S80's and S60's at the moment. Any recommendations?

D'oh. Wasn't able to get a full list. I got a stack of nothing-info. But I bought an 04 S80 today so the Volvo streak extends. I'll miss the S40 forum!

Wow that was fast. I'm amazed there was that much internal damage. I'm guessing there is damage to the front radiator support. What was the mileage on the car? I'm guessing it's now off to the auction.

The mileage on the car was somewhere around 119,250. They appraised it at $6040.43 (after tax). It's probably off to auction now. This was my first Volvo, and after 80,000 or so worth of oil changes at this one place, they finally admit they weren't ever sure how to change the oil and had been breaking parts and trying to retrofit generic things (like breaking off the cartridge housing thing and trying to fit a regular oil filter on it). It had some leaks and some burning.

I just picked this up this morning:

So far, it's one of the nicer cars I've ever been in.

If I still lived in CT I wouldhave come to take a look at the S40. I suspect the salvage value from the insurance company would of been very cheap. O well glad to hear you got another volvo. Why would an oil change place have such a hard time replacing that filter element. If you have the right tool you can easily turn that canister. Don't think I would be going there for service anymore.
