Default 2002 Volvo S40 Rear Turn Signal

My left rear turn signal flashes very fast which I thought was the bulb. There are 3 bulbs and the middle (larger of the three) is the one that flashes fast. It seems that the bulb alone cannot be replaced unless I am trying to take it out incorrectly. Does the whole rear flasher unit need to be replaced or can the bulb be replaced. If so what am I doing wrong?? Thanks in advance.

if the rear directional bulb is flashing why would it need to be replaced? Did you check the front bulb to make sure its lit? you are correct in that (at least on older cars) the frequency of the flash is based on the resistant each bulb has - so a burned out bulb gives a faster flash. The replacement bulb for the turn signals are in the owners manual - (rears are an 1156 bulb, front are 3457NAs) so it may be that you have some contact issues between the bulb and the socket. Did you try pressing in while turning?

Hey guys....thanks. So the front left turn signal is not flashing. So from what you are saying I assume that the front turn signal bulb is the one that needs to be replaced? And because the left rear is flashing rapidly that needs to be replaced too?

And yes...pressing and turning releases the rear bulb. Thank you.

I believe you just need to replace the one turn signal bulb. The trick with the turn signal housing is to loosen the Phillips head screw that holds the turn signal housing to the headlight housing. Then very carefully pull the turn signal housing forward as in the direction the car moves when driving. Do not pull sideways. There are two little brittle plastic protrusions that will snap off if you pull sideways. This I discovered the hard way.

Hey Hudini...so I replaced the front turn signal bulb. It lights up but does not flash when using the turn signal. The rear bulb still flashes rapidly. So replacing that rear bulb will not do the trick? Is it some kind of connectivity issue other than the bulb? Thanks.

Yeah...I can see how you would snap them off. I would have had you not told me to pull the housing outward. Thanks

The side marker bulb flashes normally. Would I need to replace that even though it is working properly? Thanks

First I would make sure both front turn signal bulbs are the same and both rear turn signal bulbs are the same.

Does the right side also flash fast? If so I would suspect the flasher unit. Whenever I have trouble with flashers I switch to the electronic version.

I had a tech look at the turn signal issue. I put the bulb in backwards he said. I guess it fits both ways?? The turn signal light was lit just not flashing. It now flashes after he re-installed it the right way. Aye yai yai....
