Default 2004 (gen 1) S40 strut replacement

Hello - I have a 04 s40 with 300k on it. I don't believe the struts have ever been replaced. I want to replace the front struts as the right strut shudders over any medium sized "bump" in the road. Similar symptoms of when my BMW's rear shocks went out (traction control would literally kick in over bumps). Also there is a decent clunking sound when making left turns over bumpy roads. I realize this could be the mount OR the sway bar drop link (replaced left side with similar symptoms). My question is: do I need a spring compressor to remove the entire shock/spring assembly? I was planning on buying the whole assembly with intent of just swapping them out. Compressors scare the hell out of me. I know that if I were to try and change JUST the shocks and keep the springs I would need a compressor.

Thanks!

To change just the struts you need a strut spring compressor. An air or electric impact wrench helps a lot too. I have never had an issue with strut springs. With the strut removed and in a vice just place the compressor evenly on opposite sides of the spring. Now gently and evenly tighten the compressor until the spring compresses just enough to get the top spring perch off. This is where the impact wrench comes in handy as it will spin the top nut off without having to hold the strut from turning.

While you have it apart you also change the strut mounts and strut bearings. The mounts wear out and causes the clunking noise. The strut bearings are plastic and get dry.

Removing the struts does throw off your alignment a bit. If you are super careful and put it back exactly where it was before removal you should be ok though.
