Default Gen 1 v70R or Gen 2 v70?

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and as of this moment I do not own a Volvo of any kind. My wife and I are looking into getting one, preferrably a v70 model. Me personally, I like the 99 V70R style. My wife likes the next generation but I just can't get past the non painted cladding. So I am asking you guys which model you prefer and why. I know this has probably been asked a million times. My wife will probably win at which model year we get. I found a 99 Black V70R for $2995. It looks awesome! Anyway, as far as performance upgrades in the future, which would be better?

Is this because of the drive by wire in the 99? I looked at a 98 yesterday. Silver but with high miles. Pictures looked great but was grossly misrepresented. Found a couple zip ties holding sway bar in rear. Steered away from that one.

LOL, there are a lot of dogs out there.

That and a few other issues like tranny problems, etc.

Thanks for this video. This will help me out in determining what I buy. Have you found the prices that he throws out to be somewhat accurate? I would do all my own work so I wouldnt have to deal with labor costs. I am thinking that I will need to convince my wife to get a Gen1 model. I think they look better anyway.

This is the V70R that I looked at the other day. The pictures do NOT represent the condition of car. There were scuff marks all over. The rear driver side bumper looked like the paint was scuffed up and showing the black material under paint. The front bumper looked like someone drove into a tall curb because it was all broken up. The rear gate has no V70R emblem yet when I looked at the car it had a red one in place. I was not happy.

I am also looking at this model.

LOL, I can see that the '98 is beat up. The coolant reservoir bottle hose is even broken off.

The '99 doesn't look bad. I would check compression which should be good at those miles. These motor should last 500k if taken care of.

I would look for a car from the southern states to avoid rusty stuff if that matters to you. When you run the AutoCheck it will show you the different locations it was registered in. I see things in the pics of the '99 that need to be done but it looks great compared to the other.

What sort of things stands out on the 99? I was pretty pissed to see the silver one in the condition that I found it when I looked at it the other day. I spent an hour drive to look at it. I didn't even talk to the guy. Just left. One thing that stood out to me was the lack of driveshaft but I was hoping maybe the guy removed it for performance or wear and tear in summer.
