From doing a small GOOGLE search I found out that your trim of the s40 is not turbocharged. Thusly your basically screwed for really good aftermarket parts. However if you have to mod your NA Volvo I suggest this stuff.
a. Custom 2.25" to 2.5" catback system with a muffler such as a Flowmaster. Any muffler that has baffles in it. You want baffles because the NA Volvo's need backpressure and if you went with a Magnaflow muffler you wouldn't get that because a Magnaflow muffler is a straight through design muffler.
b. Custom intake. Or add a K&N panel filter. Also to answer a question that you may ask. No the K&N filter will not hurt your MAF. The only way it will hurt your MAF is if you over oil it. So the key is not to over oil it.
c. You might look into NA ecu upgrades. They will not give you the same power as the turbo ecu upgrades. But will give you a tiny boost in power.
NA's in general are worthless to mod engine wise. Because you wont make near as much power as what a turboed Volvo makes stock. Thusly stick to interior, exterior mods.
