2005 s40
My 05 s40 won't start or release key. Have power .can hear clicking won't crank
|
I’m having same issue
B4 It would start and then stalls out but not before the gauges went haywire! I’m still having this issue
|
The starter solenoid is sticking so will need to be replaced , is a manual ? try push starting it
|
If you have an automatic, check the shifter release button to see if its stuck inward - the shifter has an interlock which keeps the car from starting when it senses its not in park and will not allow the key to be removed.
|
I am confused

Dondo3, if your car starts (or even tries to start), your interlock is fine.

You may simply have a weak/bad/almost dead battery or a poor connection to the ok battery.

With car off battery reads 12.4 any other possibilities
A good next step would be to load test the battery and if ok - use a compatible scan tool to look for any electronic faults. |

Yes, a broken connection inside the battery. The battery is 6 cells connected by buss bars - metal connections between the cells connecting them in series. If one of those cracks maybe from thermal expansion and contraction the battery can still register 12.4 volts - but it won't be able to provide any current under load. Can you jump start the car? (using quality jumper cables)

Hoonk is right (as usual). Throw a voltmeter on the battery and see what happens when you turn the key to the start position (don't rely on the jumper box voltmeter - it could be reading its internal battery).
