I JUST joined today and I owe a 2005 S40 with just 50K miles. Looking for improved performance and don't know where to start. This is a non-turbo vehicle and automatic as well.

Non turbo, I would concentrate all my efforts on handling first as that's where you'll get the most notable gains. Then maybe an intake and exhaust.
Look Here for a good start.
Sway bars, and springs/coil overs will make a huge difference. Then you should look into a strut brace and maybe the lower chassis braces.

Just my opinion though.

Hey, Dave....If you decide to do somthing like replacing the computer chip, share with the group and let us know how it goes....Never did any mods on my '05, and am not sure where I'd start....Another guy (I think on another Volvo site) made his own cold air intake for a std. S40 like ours - it seems that K&N, etc., only make them for the TURBO models...don't know why....I'm sure that if you can either find or make one, you'll pick up a couple HP (and it'll make a bitchin' sound when you push the pedal down !)
