Default 2005 vs 2008 engine differences?

Researching shows a 2008 engine (B5254T7) will not fit into a 2005 (that came with B5254T3). The B5254T3 should only fit in a 2005-2007.

Are the differences physical or electrical or both? Does anyone know?

Reason Im asking is I have a spare B5254T7 and found a S40 II T5 2005 that I could put it in. (If it would fit or I can swap parts/sensors over to make it work.)

Thanks in advance!

I did a quick visit to the Volvo Modular Engine wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_...engine#B5254T7 which suggests the turbo/manifold set up is different and there may be different ECU tunes but both use the Bosch ME9 engine management system so its likely the sensors etc are the same.

Thanks for the reply.

Do Volvos fair well with swapping ECUs? I have the engine ECU from the 2008. Having a complete engine from the 2008 and having the 2005 still complete, I would think I could make this work. I even still have the entire wiring harness from the 2008...

not sure of your goal on swapping ECUs - I think if your intent is to recover a long block from a different year then my thinking would be to retain the original harness and original ECU. If you are looking for some gain from a newer ECU, then I'd suggest taking the old ECU which is appropriate to the wiring harness and sensors and install a tuned program. To really do it right, you'd want to take a look at the wiring diagrams for both models just to make sure there's nothing else going on.

Hello all, I would like to know the same info. I have a 2009 c70 with a blown engine and a 2005 s80 that I got for free with a good engine and transmission with 60k miles. would a complete engine/trans swap be possible? BTW the C70 has the B5254T7 and the S80 has the B5254t2

With engine swaps like this, it's usually dead easy to get it 95% done. That last 5% can make you wish you'd bought a Toyota.

I'd never try to swap in an "almost compatible" engine for something like this. I'd save that aggravation for something "interesting" (like an aluminum V8 in a VW Squareback, like I saw on the road the other day). ;-)
