2006 S40 T5 Reading Engine Codes

I have a OBDII engine code reader and it will not read the code on this car. What do I need to get to read the "Check engine" engine code?

reading engine codes

Looks like I need to get a code reader that is CAN compatable (Controlled Area network), Actron makes several readers that are CAN compatable.
