About to buy used: What questions to ask dealers?
Hey all!
I'm looking for an S40 of any type from the past 2-3 years with no more than 40K miles, and trying to get the best deal possible.
Given that certain cars have certain typical issues and problems (with the S40, I've heard of soft wheels that bend, the rear brakes/specialty rotors wearing really fast, head and tail lights blowing out, etc), what kind of questions should I be asking the dealer about the particular used model I'm getting, to assure I'm getting the best value for the most dependable car? Does anyone have any advice?
I'd much appreciate!
Thank you and look forward to meeting ya'll!
Alec

The way I understand it, the issues you have listed are mainly from the 2000-2004 era. In 2004.5, the redesign was leap years better. I own a 2000, and yeah, it has issues, but something about the little thing just grows on you. Anyway, watch the issues between the two generations, 2-3 years old will get you what sounds like a much better car.

Hi Alec,
The dealer probably wouldn't tell you much about what to look for, because after all, they're trying to sell the car.
I would take it to elsewhere for pre-purchase inspection, preferably by a certified Master ASE technician at an independent shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes. Youshould also do some inspections yourself; you do not have to be a technician to find fluid leaks, etc... Make sure the possible buy comes with full maintenance record & owner's manual. A car that is missing the owner's manual is guaranteed to be neglected.
Also, check the recalls at:
http://automallusa.net/2000/volvo/s40/recalls.html
Scroll down for different year's models. The dealers are required to fix recall items at free of charge to customers.
Best of luck in finding a decent Volvo.
