Default Air Filter

My 2000 Volvo S40 2.0 Non Turbo currently has one of those rectangle air filters, but I've been thinking of changing over to a cone air filter.

Problem is, none of my local spares stores, know what size cone filter goes on this car, even with an Engine and VIN Number given.

Can someone please assist? What size do I ask for?

What's your goal? If it's to enhance the intake noise, then fine.

But otherwise, your engine will be breathing hotter, thinner air and will make less power than it does now, and your fuel efficiency will drop, and likely will end up ingesting more particulate matter, which isn't good.

also where are you located? AFAIK, in the US, Volvo only sold the low pressure turbo 1.9T S40s - not that it matters. Your car is not going to gain any power from a new cone air filter. The factory airbox is actually quite good. My suggestion would be to simply buy a new filter that's appropriate to your car - for my 2000 S40 1.9T I use a Mann C35941 paper air filter. I also recommend avoid an oiled filter like the KNs - don't like the idea of the intake air picking up any of that oil and leaving it on the MAF...
