Default Another S40 Question

Just trying to get a handle on my car. 2002 S40 with 100,000K miles. When the yellow low fuel light comes on the manual says there are 1.9 gallons left. But when the numerical mile indicator shows how many miles you have left it goes from "20 miles + 0...to..15 miles + 0 to 10 miles + 0...to the flashing Fuel" word in a matter of 10 miles or so. That does not seem like 1.9 gallons of fuel left. What's up with that? Thanks.

The tank holds 16 gallons to bone dry. You will find that with the gauge on empty and the low fuel level light on when you fill the tank it only holds ~10 gallons. My guess is that Volvo was going to make absolutely sure you wouldn't run out of gas. Some people have even removed the fuel sending unit/fuel pump assembly and bent the fuel sender float to more accurately reflect the fuel level.

Thanks....don't know how much actually was left. I have let it run until the "Fuel" light starts flashing a couple times then filled the tank. I am going to run it this time until the fuel light comes on and then fill it and see. It will be interesting. I will post what I find.
