They usually only get replaced when the system is opened.

What are you symptoms?

I had the compressor replaced due to the bearing going bad (loud noise). System worked before but after new compressor and recharge by a very good Volvo independent, the system would sometimes cool ok, not great. It would give cold air for a couple of minutes then go warm (not hot) and back and forth. Performance much worse when hot outside vs. just warm. Compressor is coming on. Today, thinking there might be leftover oil in the lines from the compressor change which would result in too much oil in the lines, he drained system with a/c vacuum pump and recharged. Recharge was very slow to take and after, there was no cooling at all.

He's thinking the dryer may be clogged.

What do you think?

Did he change the orifice tube?
The dryer might be bad.

No on the tube.

Would my symptoms indicate a bad dryer? What happens when they go bad?

When the dryer goes bad there is moisture in the system not allowing it to cool properly.
Have him change the tube as well.
