RE: Cabin Air filter on 2005 S40
You're not going to believe it. It buried away behind the center stack with access from the left side. If you've got a NA left-hand drive car, that means the gas pedal must be removed (!). I know, I know ... it's a ridiculous procedure compared to any VW. But, what can we do?!?!
I tried twice, and then gave up after realizing I don't bend in the direction needed to get access to the screws and connector that attach the pedal to its base. And even then - what I've heard - the actual filter doesn't want to either exit or re-enter it housing without giving you a small fight. I suppose with a lift (so you can stand and reach up to the pedal) and flexible sockets it's a snap!
Somewhere here - or on another board - I did find the actual procedure. If I can find it, I'll post the link.

WOW! This was the most frustrating job I have ever done on a car. You do have to remove the gas pedal by removing three nuts. I took off the panel that goes under the steering wheel which gives better access. You should use a flexible extension to get to pedal. Once the pedal is off (I left the wire harness attached and swung the pedal to the side). Once the pedal is off you just need to remove a couple of screws to get the filter out. I had a pretty mildewy smell coming out of the vents with my ac on. Once I replaced the filter, which actually looked pretty clean, the smell is totally gone and fresh air comes out of the vents. Not only was taking the pedal off pretty hard, but that panel below the steering wheel isn't the easiest. If you can avoid taking that off by using a pretty flexible attachment, that would be the best way to go.
Good luck!

You're my hero [sm=smiley20.gif] ! I wish I had persevered; it kind of bugged me to give up on it. So, you didn't actually disconnect the pedal from its wiring harness, correct? That was another reason I stopped: I feared unplugging the pedal and then not being able to reconnect it due to its location. Thanks for the tip! I think I may try again on principle!!
