Default Code getter question?

My check engine light comes on quite often on my 2001 volvo s40, and to have volvo diagnose it they want $200. I hear that I can get a code puller from Autozone. Now my question is: if I pull my codes with a code getter what do I do next? How or what do I compare my codes to to find out why my check engine light is coming on? Thanks

Alot of times the scanner will come with a book that somewhat helps you in the right direction.

Autozone will plug it in & tell you what codes are coming up on the spot. Shouldn't have to rent. At least you don't here in TX. You can search on internet for Volvo DTC codes & go through the results until you find one that will give summary of possibilities that will point you in the right direction. Be aware that just because you have the code & where it came from, there may be 100 reasons that it got the code unless it is just general failure of a sensor. If you get a code from a certain sensor, there may be upstream or downstream problems making the sensor throw the code.

I had mine checked at Autozone and they refered to a data base they had and gave me an idea of what it was. After you have that you can post it and i'm sure someome will have had that problem and can steer you in the right direction. Good luck.
