Hi all!

I have a 2004 S40, 111,000mi. Just had the sway bar bushings replaced a few weeks ago. Now, there is what I describe as a continuous knocking, or maybe clunking noise coming from the front driver side. The noise is vehicle speed sensitive, and only happens when there is no load on the axles. In other words, under acceleration or braking, or cornering, the noise goes away.....You only hear the noise while coasting. There is no noise when you drive the car in circles either direction at full lock.

I'm about 90% certain it is a CV joint on the driver side half shaft, but would like someone to confirm that.

Any diagnostic help with this one would be much appreciated!

Sway bar end links good?

 

this sound like my post just above. My diagnostics was drop links maybe it is your's too my car has 95k on it and now need to be changed so your car has more so they may not have been changed and after doing the bushings may have disturbed the links!?! Take off hard till the wheel spins and see if it makes alot of knocking if so i can 90% guarantee you it is the links, good luck!!!!

 

Thanks for the replies. I will inspect the end links today. But I'm a little puzzled why this sound would be speed sensitive. In other words, it 'knocks/clunks' faster the faster the car is going and vice versa. At slow speeds, I can get it down to a 'clunk' every second or so. I don't think the end links being worn would cause that kind of noise would they?

 

The tire might be out of round and when driving it might be acting like if you were driving on an egg.

oh, with my problem it stays the same you actually cant hear it when going at high enough speed. Puzzled, goodluck with it anyway whatever it is!?!!

 

Well....finally solved this one after many forum discussions, etc. And learned 2 lessons (or should I say learned again!).....

1. Rule #1 of Basic Troubleshooting...Start with the simple things first. The problem ended up being a loose lug nut on the front driver side tire....go figure!

2. Never, ever trust the Goodyear shop to rotate your tires without checking your lug nut torque when you get home!!!
