Disable seat belt reminder in 2006 S40
Its interesting that someone buys a Volvo, world renouned for its safety, yet chooses not to utilize the most basic safety feature in the car, the seatbelt. (Volvo invented the 3-point safety belt used in cars today)
Ever seen someone not wear a seatbelt at a crash?
I have.
You would be an utter fool and an idiot to not wear a seatbelt while driving. There's a reason that volvo want you to wear your seatbelt, so that you don't die of internal bleeds or go through your windshield and find yourself 65 feet from your car with your brain matter jiggling on the ground with the wind.

Easy Vender, I thought this forum was for asking and answering questions about the car, not to have you come on here and pass judgement on us all. I couldn't care less about the morbid stuff that you've seen. I'm not an utter fool or an idiot; I just was wondering if you could disable the feature. I bet you're a real fun guy to hang out with...like that SNL skit Debbie Downer. I think I'll call you Danny Downer. Later Danny
Because gordon, I don't like being broken down on the side of the road. You know what FORD stands for right? Not only are Volvos known for making the safest cars in the world, their quality standards are high too.
The thing is, I actually wear my seat belt 90% of the time. There are just times when I just don't, for whatever reason. It's a shame though that a person comes to a forum for information, and instead is barraged with judgmental or self-righteous remarks. It certainly discourages me from using them. Thanks.

Its hard to praise Volvo for their quality standards while at the same time criticizing Ford. Any quality standards that Volvo now has are descended from their parent company, Ford.
As for the seatbelt indicator perhaps you could ask your service advisor at your next visit if there is anyway to disable this feature. I doubt there is any [easy] way to do it.

By the way that dinging might be annoying but deal with it. It will be harder to try and find where to shut it off at. Just deal with it.
As a volvo owner, Ford may own Volvo, But ill still deny it lol, For one I see alot of volvo specs going into ford cars...............Thankfully its not the other way around...lol which is oxymoronic!

vbvborder,
This is the stuff of our modern day technocracy. People will take away your freedom and invade your privacy and they will tell you it is for your own good. Any way I thought I would at least try to give you some real informtion. People I associate with call it the truth.
The seat belt chime is tied into the SRS (safety restraint system) of your car. It is more complicated than you would think. It uses seriel port communication between the various devices that make up the system. These devices communicate with a computer that decides basically whether or not to deploy the airbags depending on the state of the various components. Two of the requirements are that the seat belt is latched and the weight of the occupant exceeds a certian threshold. In most cases trying to unplug the seatbelt wiring will result in an SRS fault code being displayed. (This may not bother you but no one will want to buy the car unless the code is reset by the dealer)
OK here are the options I know of. They involve faking out the SRS system into thinking that your seatbelt is fastened. Keep in mind that the SRS will deploy the airbag when an occupant is NOT wearing their seatbelt if it beleives that your seat belt is latched. This is dangerous as the airbag and seatbelt work in conjunction with each other. I do NOT know if it is more dangerous for the airbag to deploy if an occupant is NOT wearing a seatbelt or for the airbag to fail to deploy when an occupant is NOt wearing their seat belt.
Method 1 - Even thought the seatbelt latch has an electronic component there is also a mechanical component. Using a thin screw driver you can click the latch down. However this solution is some what inconvenient as it can be tricky to get the latch to lock. Also if you choose to wear your seat belt some times you will need to unlock the latch using the normal seat belt latch release and then click it down with the screw driver again. It is also possible that you can damage the latch mechnism with the screw driver. Beware of soltutions along these lines where the seat belt latch is dissassembled again a srs service fault code may appear if he seatbelt latch is disassembled.
Method 2 - Buy another female seat belt latch. Take the second femal latch and bolt in in place where the original one installs. With out unpluging the wires to the original tape it underneath the seat. Be careful where you put it so it will not be disturbed or damaged by the normal movement of the seat. Use method 1 to engage the latch.
Ideally there should be a way to disable the chime and leave the SRS system in tact to behave as it is intended but Volvo has tried to make this difficult. For them is is nothing simple programing. It is my understanding that their proprietary code makes this especially difficult. I think this is foolish. SRS is excellent but the seat belt chime is annoying. I feel so strongly about this that I will not buy another Volvo unless the dealer or manufacturer agrees to disable the chime. Why should you have to buy something that annoys you.
It would be irresponsible not to say that statistically speaking you are safer with your seat belt on but I beleive in freedom and feel it should be your choice. It is interesting to note that at certian speeds and certian collision scenarios a seat bet will break your lower rib and puncture your lung when the same accident with out a seat belt would result in only minor bruises. It is also difficult to lean back and drive in reverse when wearing a seatbelt. The same problem looking over your shoulders occurs when you are looking both ways at an intersection or making a lane change. I aslo feel that the way you drive provides the most safety but when you or some one else fails to drive right SRS could save your life.

My girlfriend has just bought a V50, in a week of ownership it has immobilised itself with a faulty ABS warning, the seatbelt warning sounds whether the seatbelt is engaged or not, the cd player doesn't work and that's costly to fix. So using the power of Google I searched for "seatbelt fault" and ended up here.
I thought there's nothing more frustrating than reading through a forum only to get nowhere, so I thought I'd add a solution for anyone that ended up here like me, but that wanted to bypass a warning buzzer occasionally.
