Default Does anyone have repair manual?

I have a 2001 S40 that broke a timing belt. I can not turn the crank over now so I am guessing I have a bent valve. I am going to rebuild everything from the heads up if I am going to be in there. Does anyone have a repair manual for a S40 1.9 turbo? Thank you in advance.

I am new to working on Volvos and was wondering if there is certain place/places to get good OEM or comparable parts for low prices that forum members use?

Hi and welcome to the site.

I got my manual from ebay but rarely use it. I usually use threads that I find throught the google process.

Also, as for parts, many parts can be found on sites that are linked on this site.

Welcome. Sorry to hear about the timing belt. Mine did basically the same thing and bent all 8 exhaust valves. I used the European version of the Haynes manual for the S40. I couldn't find a North American version anywhere. You can pick it up online anywhere books are sold or specifically from IPD. Volvo Parts, Accessories and Performance Specialist Since 1963

The absolute source material is VIDA. If you are running 32bit Windows XP Pro or 7 Pro, you can install this on your home computer. This is what the dealer uses. Paired with a DICE device you can do what they do. I bought mine off ebay for $10 or so. You can get away with older versions like 2010A if you only own the 2001.

Parts are available in many places. I've used all these Volvo sites many times:
Volvo Parts, Accessories and Performance Specialist Since 1963
Volvo Parts, Free Tech support and Free information is available at Swedish Auto Parts
Car Parts - OEM & Genuine European Replacement Parts Catalog | FCP Euro

The one big gotcha is to not remove the CVVT gear from the exhaust cam unless you have the cam holder tool ($$). The reason is simple, the CVVT is not keyed and can be mounted in any position. If replacing the cam seal behind the gear simply slip it off the other end.

Are there any actual paper book manuals available anywhere?
I also am a new owner of a 2001 S40 and would love to get my hands on one.
Only thing I find on ebay is a factory wiring diagram book (which I may just get yet), a haynes manual and multiple cd or dvd versions. You mentioned that the VIDA disc was the way to go Hudini. Is this what the dealer techs use or are paper manuals just REALLY hard to locate??
Was a tech at Mazda dealer for several decades and we got a new set of manuals for each model every year.

The dealer uses VIDA with a subscription that keeps it up to date. The ebay VIDA is hacked and does not update. If you are really into these cars get the DiCE tool to go with VIDA. Mine is the Chinese version and it works just fine. Also, software updates for the ECM are by subscription too so you cannot get those without paying extra. VIDA does come with a separate wiring diagram CD that works on any PC.

The only paper book is the European version of the Haynes Manual. It covers most things pretty well. Just sort out the "boot" and "bonnet" from the trunk and hood and you have a fairly decent source. The 2004.5 and newer models have a North American version of Haynes.

Thank you very much for that info Hudini.
Not very fond of the Haynes or Chilton manuals. Always seem to be too vague and trying to cover too many models and years. Have been kind of spoiled having access to the factory Mazda manuals in last 20 years so will stick to them in Volvo.
I see all kinds of DICE units on ebay and 99.9% from China. One not from China says it is OE Volvo but ask price is 2K so will pass on that one for now.
$150 for the average is great for getting one from China. I wonder if it will also allow me to enable the foglights I am adding and program keyless remotes to operate?? Any input on that ability?? Guess there is only one way to find out. Most I had looked at only came with the VIDA dvd and not the wiring diagram but I also found a great selection of VIDA dvd that were activated and came with wiring diagrams from Canada so may go that route as well.
I did notice that the DICE units for sale specified computer to have only Windows XP PRO as operating system and Internet Explorer 8 as browser. XP Pro certainly no longer to be found but willing to bet I can find a laptop on ebay that has that operating system and can update it to Explorer 8.
Since you are in China do you have any particular recomendations for a seller that will provide quality DICE unit??

I bought the one from the link below. It's from a factory in Shenzhen and has worked pretty well for me so far. It's used very rarely though.

2013 wholesale free shipping hot volvo diagnostic tool volvo vida dice VOLVO VIDA DICE 2012A-in Code Readers & Scan Tools from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com

I recently bought a new OEM spare key for my 2005 and am itching to try to program it. But I'm stuck in China until mid-May so it will have to wait. Unless I can get someone to show me how it's going to be trial and error.

I have confirmed 32 bit Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate also work with VIDA. The problem is that XP Pro cannot be upgraded to 7 Pro or Ultimate without wiping your hard drive. I believe there is a way to transfer your files to another drive and then move them back once the upgrade is complete. Lots of work and time plus the need for a 2nd external drive.

Let me know when you're ready to try to program that key and I'll walk you through it. I'm curious to see if downloads will work on a bootleg VIDA copy

Buy an ALLDATA subscription. ALLDATA has the Volvo factory repair manual online. Doesn't cost much - 6 month subscription for $9.95 with a discount code. Can't beat that.

Add one on that barbie for me too!!!
Cold and rainy up here in Oregon today but should be nice enough this weekend.
Make sure you look at the computer requirements for the system to work. Had a Mazda IDS that would not work with Windows 7 according to Mazda and it indeed did not. Working on my setup. Found a laptop on ebay with XP Pro that I received today. Just waiting on the DiCE unit from China. Ordered the one that Hudini got but need to sign to to alibaba. Will see how it all works when I get the setup. Am curious to see how the VIDA works and also how the difference may be with the Canada version discs. Ordered that as well but will see try out the China version first.
Pop a cold one and celebrate the weekend is here.
