Default door lock problem

I have a door lock problem. The passenger side rear door lock does not operatate fully. By that I mean when I unlock the doors it only comes out partially. I am not sure why.

Luckily no one is usually in the back seat so it is not much of an issue. The door lock does seems to get stuck between fully open and fully closed and that requires me to have to open or close it manually. Not fun.

Is there something that I can do about this? Is the door lock mechanism easy to replace?

Any help apprecuated.

Thanks in advance.

I resolved an identical issue with the driver side passenger door. Look at the latching mechanism at the rear of said door. Mine was grimy and gummed up. I cleaned it with a degreaser. There also is a rubber cover the size of a quarter that can be removed. I shot some WD 40, and SPARINGLY applied some to the shaft that also only used to move half way up. It didn't work immediately, but the next day it worked fine. Good luck.

Default Interior Door Panel Removal

Okay, but to do that one must get the interior door panel off. That lets one access the parts inside the dorr.

How do I remove the interior door panel on my 2002 Volvo s40?

Thanks in advance.

Negative. Simply open the affected door. Look at the latch and the striker. Clean both. There is a black, round rubber cover that is easy to prize out. Inspect the insides using a flashlight. Squirt some WD 40 inside. Then lubricate the shaft that only rises partially upwards. I used graphite, then WD 40. Manually work the latch a dozen times with your key fob and by using the door handle from the outside to work the WD40 into the lock.

I had success without removing the panel (which is very difficult)--and you will too.
