Electrical system died while driving but the car kept going

Good morning,
I had an interesting experience with my car this morning. Driving to work when suddenly the entire electrical system stopped: no radio, no lights, no speedometer, odometer--nothing electrical at all. There were three lights flashing, and one of them was the red exclamation mark. But the car kept going---it didn't have as much power. At one point I had to slow down, and let my foot off the gas. When I pressed it again, everything suddenly came back on. Then when I got to work and turned the car off, it wouldn't start again. I waited a few minutes, and then suddenly it worked. I replaced the battery about 3 weeks ago--any chance this could be the cause of this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Check for a loose ground strap. There ought to be at least two, one from the battery to the engine(or the frame) and one connecting the engine to the frame. and make sure your battery connections are tight, loose connections can shift when you hit bumps and lose contact even for a split second which would cause electrical malfunctions.
