I recently purchased my first volvo, its a 2006 s40 2.4i. I have a few questions. The car has a premium dolby audio package. I cant find out what the package consists of though. Does anyone know how many speakers, are they the dynaudios? is speaker replacement a headache? does anyone have suggestions for new speakers? Any help would be much appreciated

 

I am not sure, but speaker replacement is tough as there are rivets and the door panels are difficult.

 

The Premium Sound System has 3-way components in the front doors, 2-way components in the rear and a 2-way center channel. It has a 6-disk changer too. The sub-woofer is optional, although it has decent bass without.

I believe the ICM and CD are made by Mitsubishi, speakers by Harman Industries (makers of Infinity, JBL and Harman Kardon) and the amp by Alpine. In recent years (I think 2008+) the speakers are provided by Dynaudio.

If you poke around through the menus you will find settings for CD Surround and Radio Surround (ProLogicII, 3-ch and 2-ch). Down further you will find separate equalizers for front and rear.

Modifications can be difficult. The system is in separate components ICM and CD in the dash, AM FM Module (AFM) in the trunk rear right quarter panel, the amp is on the opposite side and all interconnected by fiber optic. Speakers can be upgraded. Yes, they are pop-rivited in but they can easily be drilled out. However, the system is pretty decent once you get the equalizers set right.
