Check the control arm or have a shop check it.

The are 4 mounts total. On my 2001 worn out mounts caused a shake while idling in gear with your foot on the brake.

Does it make any clunking noises?

Upper strut mount, ball joint, sway bar link or cv shaft.

I just went through this on my 2000 Volvo S40.

It doesn't do it when idling or when the engine is NOT under load right?

If so... Go under the front driver side to the Inner CV Joint and give it some movement (i didn't want to use the word shake but that's technically what you're doing).

If it has any play in it, then you might as well replace the Entire Axel on that side.

The Axel is about $160.00 for a Dura-last with a lifetime warranty. And to replace it yourself will take about an hour.

It's not hard to take out. It's just like any other standard car. You need a Half Inch Socket to take off the Axel Nut. I would suggest a Craftsman wrench. The reason being for the craftsman wrench is because when we were trying to pull mine off, of course it had been put on by a Torque Wrench. So we bent 2 and completely broke 1 of the 1/2" sockets. (craftsman's have lifetime warranties no matter how many you break they will hand you a new one)

Just take precaution. It's really not that hard to get that thing off and back on.

Now if you aren't to DIY, then taking it to a volvo mechanic is your best bet. It's probably going to cost you a pretty penny to get "certified volvo" tech on it.

I think austinnoah1 answered quite nice. He suggests a test to confirm.
