Default gasket repair?

Hi newbie,

I have an 2000 S40. I am the original owner. In general, I guess I am happy with my S40. Engine shifting is weird but other than that it is ok.

So a few months ago. I noticed that oil was leaking. I took it to my regular place and they cleaned my engine and put in some dye. I recently took it back and they told me that I have a leak. They need to replace the gasket for the oil pan(don't know what that is) and that the part is pretty cheap but the repair would be about $500 because of where this part is - they need to remove the muffler or something and put it back so it will take about 4 or 5 hours.

I called the dealer, they said they never heard of this problem with the S40. They want to charge me $100 to look at the problem. If there is a problem they will apply the $100 to the price of the repair. The repair estimate is $700 - 800. So here are my questions:

1. Has anyone else had this problem?
2. Which should I do? Take it to the dealer? Take it to my regular place?

Thanks. oh mileage on car is about 87K.

Yes, leak oil can occure at that millege. If you do have oil pan leak the labor takes 3.5 hours. If it the the lower part of the cylinder block then the labor to fix that takes about 8 hours.
