got rear-ended while stopped..
Crap.. I was at a complete stop at a toll booth and some lady decides to take her foot off of the break, while I'm paying the toll. She hits the rear-end of my beautiful 2002 S40. It was sooo loud! I had visions of the whole back end crunched in.
Fortunately, all she did was scratch and chip paint off of the bumper. It left a scratch with the outline of her license plate. Maybe a small dent in the bumper, it's hard to tell.
I'm just curious how much the bumper can protect. Is it possible for anything to be out of alignment, like the chassis, rear axle, brakes, etc? The rear brakes sound like they squeal every once in while now(maybe they always have and I just notice it now). How fast does someone have to hit the rear bumper for it to do any real damage?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

you should b ok, volvo bumpers are designed to snap off when hit actually...my girlfriend has a 2001 s40 and she rearended a truck, nothing was badly damaged exceptd i did have to buy the bracket that snaps the bumper on. sounds like your brackets didnt even break, w/o those being damaged, nothing else could really be damaged. obv if something feels bad like your car pulling to the left or something out of the ordinary u should get checked. bumper work shouldnt be more than 500 at a good quality autobody shop, maaco will do it for extra cheap

Glad you are ok and sorry about your car. A good body shop can have it looking good as new.
Same thing happened to me (see photos); only the car behind me was going highway speed. It was loud and looked like an explosion of plastic all over the Washington beltway. Notice how the crumple zone worked and the high strength steel cage prevented intrusion into the passenger compartment. None of the glass was broken. The WHIPS worked flawlessly. I didn't even have a back ache after the accident. That is why...VOLVO!
The 3rd photo is taken of the area just behind the back seat. The floor is rumpled indicating that the cross member frame that goes the width of the car was bent. The car was totaled.
