We are doing a head gasket replacement on the 02 s40 1.9 liter turbo. Rock auto lists 2 gasket kits, depending on what serial number is on the engine. Before or after #1818169.

Does anyone know where the serial number is located?

the engine serial number is usually on a sticker on the timing belt cover. Its also stamped on the block on the back side of the #1 cylinder (ie toward the timing belt side)

you are looking for a 7 digit number. as a plan B you can call a dealer and give them your VIN - they should be able to find the engine number. Sorry my S40 is off at college so I can't snap a pix for you :-(
