Help
Hi...I am new here....I am in desperate need of some advice. I have an 02 v40 1.9 turbo. It has 130k on it and I just put 1600.00 into a cat converter and now all of a sudden it is making the most terrible racket from either under the timing cover or just under that area. Sounds like an engine that knocks when it is going to blow a rod or something. I took it to two different volvo places but they both said that the repairs would be more than the car is worth....like 6k...I just bought it last august so I haent even had it a year yet.
I am at a loss...any thoughts? I was real good about changing the oil and about a week after the last oil change it started this racket....help help please...thanks

Ok...I am recapping... 02 V40 1.9L Turbo w/ 130k
first neither of the shops I took it to were very specific as to what was wrong with it. The knocking was coming from under the timing cover on the back side of it. The knocking started when the engine was hot.
I have been diligent about changing the oil every 2-5k miles. Had the oil changed, new fuel filter and plugs put in like a week and a half b4 the knocking started. I put manufacturer recommended 5-30 synthetic (think it was 5-30) There was a little oil around the cover where you put the oil in. The head? and on the passenger side of that area but not a lot. It didn't appear to be using oil really. I figure with that many miles it will use a little. I noticed that when it was cold it made a clicking noise like a lifter deal. But that was from day one. The knocking sounded like something was hitting the something each time it went around. It would speed up if you put the gas to it. As soon as I heard the knocking I checked the oil and it was right where it was when I left the oil change place. The service light would come on when I fired it up the go out after it got warmed up. There was no ck engine light, no temp or oil light coming on. And it ran fine until that fateful morning. I drove it easily to shop #1 and they kinda threw up their hands and sent me to a volvo place in nashville.
Shop one mentioned cam, stuck lifter, rocker arm, front seals, stuck lifter and basically said it was not worth fixing. They were not really specific or sure what the problem was...just that it wasnt worth fixing. Like they didn't say oh it's this and your screwed. It was more like it could be this this this or this and your screwed. LOL
Shop #3...they said the same thing basically...again not very specific.
The body and interior are in great shape...everything works but the engine
Also, I just but 1600 in a new cat converter and O2 sensors. I hate to get rid of it...Someone else mentioned that it could be as simple as the bearings going out in the water pump...I had the timing belt replaced just after getting it at about 102k Mi.
Is there hope or do I just need to scrap it for parts? If it really isn't worth fixing...what do you suppose it is worth and would I be better off selling it piece by piece. They said putting a new engine in it would be too expensive.
Any guidance anyone can give would be appreciated.
Thanks ...from a broken hearted volvo girl :|

I am having it towed to yet another place. A friend of mine works for TDOT...he said he would check it out for me. I will ask him to check the compression on the cylinders and let you know.
sounds good. let us know when you know.
i dont know how mechanical savy you are, but majority of these testing tools you would be able to rent for free at your local auto parts store.
what state do you live in?
