Anyone for a description?

I was looking at the VADIS and it doesn't clearly show where the O2 sensors are located although the S40 has 2: a front and a rear one.

The OBD II says low signal on both of them P0031 and P0037 I believe.

Hold up a second...

Did you check the fuse under the hood, it is F33.

There is no voltage being send to the O2 sensors for other than heating it.The O2 sensor does produce the 0-1V on its own so there is no fuse for the signal. If the signal is low the sensor must be a contaminated one which case it could be burned out (cleaned) but its most likely dead.
Looks like you have to replace them both.

The oxygen sensor is equipped with technology that allows it to ascertain exactly the level of the air-to-fuel ratio that the engine is currently burning in order to run.Install extra adapter cable. you have read the all the instruction while changing sensor.
Read out and erase the fault code. Refer to Resetting Adaptive Values as described.
Remove the connector cover. Remove the black connector for the front oxygen sensor (four wires) at the connector stay.
Install the adapter cable PN 30650686 in between the disconnected connectors. Route the adapter cable under the other cables.

I see the copy&paste skills are brilliant.Too bad that you didnt care to read the whole thing as this issue were occurring up to 04.5.Later models were not effected.

Oxygen sensor is equipped with technology that allows it to know exactly the level of air / fuel ratio, the engine is running when burning. O2 sensor fault code will tell you that the computer thinks there is something wrong with the air mixture. 9 times 10: error code O2 sensor is defective. It could be a loss, the emptiness of loss, dirty air filter, bad catalytic converter, fuel pressure, or many other things. I'm not saying do not pay, but do not be surprised if the new sensor does not solve the problem. You might want to use some diagnostic blindly before taking a new sensor.

I brought my car to the Volvo dealership to get the codes read for my check engine light. I had 3 codes actually:

DIM-E003 Configuration fault software fault (not sure what that means)

ECM-2110 Front heated oxygen sensor- signal too low

ECM-2210 Rear heated oxygen sensor - Signal too low

So im thinking i have to change the O2 sensors.

Thanks for the update. So I will have to get under the car and remove a cover where I will find the O2?

How long does it take to replace the O2 sensors and any special tool or things I need to do before and after install?

Thanks

SVT, I haven't started the work yet, I'm just gathering info and intel before i jump into it. Also very new to volvo's.

I'm looking at O2 sensors on the internet, I believe I need th buy the one that says 4-wires for the O2 sensors? There are different types i.e 1 wire, 2 wires

Yeah I am giving you some intel before you do ANYTHING!!! It takes 2 seconds to check. Under the hood, by the washer fluid filler, fuse box right there, check the FUSE!!!

Finally changed both O2 sensor with a Bosch in the front and a Denso in the back. P0031, P0037, P0137 and P1138 disappeared.

I reset the codes after the installation and when the sensors were bad they would come back straight away. But after driving about 200 miles + this week end, I just check the code and apart from the P0026 (which I determined that the valve was bad since I removed it and cleaned it and the code came back) no other codes present !!!!!

I have to change the AC belt tensioner pulley also this week and the car should no make this screaching noise. Hopefully with the solenoid valve fixed, the check engine will go away and I can finally can a regular sticker instead of a big R. Fingers crossed.

Now I also have the msessage 'SRS service urgent'. Not sure what to do with this one.

Just wanted to give an update

I know this is an old post, but I came across it and saw you just said you have an "SRS" message. My guess is that would be your "Supplemental Restraint System." just a guess.

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Both O2 sensors are fairly easy to replace. The top sensor can be removed from the top of the engine bay. I'd recommend an O2 sensor socket and a product like PB Blaster or Kroil (not liquid wrench tho, stuff never worked for me). Spray on and let soak for an hour or so then remove with the socket. If it's very rusted then a little heat on the cat convertor O2 bung works well.

On my 2001 the SRS red warning light was extinguished only when I replaced the SRS module located under the middle console. It's really easy to access. Found a junkyard 2000 S40 and all is well. I've seen them on ebay for less than a $100 too.
