Hi all,
My '01 S40 has developed a pretty loud interior "cracking" sound when I go over sharp bumps. The noise seems to come from the right A pillar area where it meets the windshield and dashboard. I had someone else drive the car as sat in the passenger seat andtried to pinpoint and push and squeeze the panels to try to get it to stop - with no luck. Has anyone had this before? No biggie, but it's driving me batty [:'(]

Does it sound like from inside or outside?

 

Hi Tech - It sounds like it's from the inside as far as I can tell.

 

Oh ok I was wondering if it was maybe the upper spring plate on the strut.
Interior nosies are not common from going over bumps. Sometimes the recirc motor strips a gear but that is a constant clicking.

 

Thanks Tech - Yeah for sure it's not suspension relatedsince it does seem to come from that pillar area. Souds almost like something with the windsheld - like something is knocking against it.

As for suspension, I do have to have my stabilizer linked changed again - seem to break oftenon our poor roads in montreal [:@] Wanna kill a suspension? come up here :>

 

What was the resolution to this? The sound is driving me crazy. I've pulled out the light/sunroof cluster and been feeling up under the headliner with a coat hanger to no avail. I also pulled the cover off the pilar airbag and can't find anything in there. Hope you were able to fix as i'm about to lose it!

 

have a mechanic check your engine mounts.

 

I had my front struts done and this fixed it.
