Default Just bought a 2001 S40 Need Help

This is my first Volvo but I know my way around a garage fairly well. The car has a few issues. It is a 2 owner with 72,000.

First I am having an intermittent problem with hesitation. Feels like a fuel cut interruption of power but very random and inconsistent. I did replace the fuel filter and seem to think the coils are suspect due to what I've read on this forum.

Second, the HVAC panel goes out. Typically it works after sitting overnight and will not power up if the car is used at other points during the day. The fan, a/c and air direction functions all go "black."

Third, if you do a kick down at about 45 mph it will kick down and free rev without going into the 2nd (?) gear. It does not seem to hook up at all. A less aggressive kick down gets proper results when the 3rd is engaged.

Last, is there no transmission dipstick? Any help would be greatly appreciated before I resort to parts swapping.

Agreed on coils.
Agreed on dipstick.
There is a relay for the HVAC. My did the same. It resets itself and everything works again. It's almost like a thermal breaker. Mine was fixed under warranty so I cannot help any further. Sorry.

Thanks for the input. I ordered the coils, wires and plugs and will get a relay too. The trans fluid level was checked too! :-D

The coils seemed to have fixed the ignition problem, thanks for the input! I switched relays around without luck on the a/c. I finally discovered that the a/c intermittent problem can be created by putting pressure on the 32 pin wiring harness that plugs into the back of the a/c switch assembly. Time for a new switch?
I also hear a louder noise from the fuel pump since replacing the gas filter. Lastly, sometimes the car will not start when you turn the key. It's like the park/neutral switch is not working. It will fire right up when it wants to after a few attempts. I dislike electrical gremlins. Are Volvos made from laid off British Leyland workers?
