Default key hard to remove from 2005 S40

We have a 2005 S40 that we've had for about 6 months now. Lately, the key is difficult to remove. It does't always turn all the way to the left, horizontal enabling it to be pulled out.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Probably just binding. First thing to try, buy some
heavy duty silicone spray heavy duty silicone spray
, use the little red spray tube and give that lock a good long rinse.

Do not spray anything in there unless you want to damage it. But it could be failing already.

I had to replace the switch in my 2005 a couple years ago. They do go bad.

Default replace switch

Were you able to replace the switch yourself? How much did it cost to replace it?

Dude, it's already damaged. The lock cylinder binds due to wear and dirt. The silicone spray does not damage the electrical part of the switch and it washes the dirt out of the lock cylinder and leaves a film of lubricant behind.

The ignition switch on my 2000 V40 would barely turn, after the silicone spray it's slick and smooth.

This is an 2005, not a 2000. It uses a plastic key fob, not a metal key.

this does not have your traditional metal key. It's an all plastic key that works electronically.

I did tackle it myself. It is rather a pain because of the tight space. VIDA calls for the dash to be removed to get to the back of the switch. I figured I could massage it out if I were careful. I ended up cutting some support pieces I probably should not have which left the panel below the switch loose a bit. If done again I would also remove the center console and part of the plastic surrounding the heater core. This, I believe, would have given me enough room where I would not have needed to trim any plastic. This in addition to removing everything in the way on the driver's side.

I just searched online for the best price. It was over $125 a while back. The price has gone up since then I'm sure.

It is a pain, but no cutting is required. The dash doesn't need to be removed and I'm pretty sure VIDA doesn't say it does because warranty time only pays like .9 if I remember correctly. With the center stack and the cluster out, you can remove the screw that holds the dash pad to the dash mount and there's enough room to get back there with a ratcheting bit driver. But it's still a pain, especially if you've never done one.
