Default Key Replacement

Will the 2007-2011 S40 key fit a 2006 S40? The keys look the same to me, but I heared the electronics in the key will not work with a pre-2007 model. I need a replacement key. Does anyone have any more information on this?

Each key has a chip in it that gets programmed to the car it's for, regardless of the year. You can't use one key in another car. They're downloaded only once, and will only work in the car they were programmed for.

And they are not cheap. You must first buy a new blank from the dealer then give them your car and new key to program together. I was quoted about $250 all together.

My dealer wanted $300 for my 2003 S40 ignition key. I ended up buying the valet key for $100.

I own an 2004 XC90.
How much did you pay for the key and for the programming? and also will the valet key start the engine? and how would you turn the off the car alarm without the remote?

My dealer wanted:
$85 for a blank key
$164 for the fob
$120 for 1 hour to program it
+ taxes
