What do you do when the only key is a valet key?

Default What do you do when the only key is a valet key?

I just discovered that the one key that came with my '85 245 is the valet key (doesn't work in the glove box or the rear cargo cover). Before I figured this out I disassembled the the cargo area lock. It appears that the difference is that the valet key is too "tall" and won't fit through the tumblers. Is it as simple as filing down the edges? The key fits into the cylinder without the tumblers.

No catch. A locksmith can make a master from a valet. When I bought my '93 240 a few months ago it came only with a valet key. The Volvo dealer tried to tell me that the only way I could get a master key was to order one through Volvo using the VIN. However, on a hunch I went to a locksmith, and 15 minutes later I had two master keys that work perfectly.

More good info. Now if I could find some good OEM blank. If at all possible, I try to get originals.

I just bought a new OEM Volvo Master Key for my 81 245. Here is the eBay link for you to get one: New Genuine Volvo Steel Master Key 240 260 Sedan Wagon GLT GT 1977 1985 | eBay

Funny, this Ebay key blank looks like a Valet Key, the plastic head is small, flat; the master keys have bigger, squarer heads. But the blanks do have the mid channel and that's what counts I suppose.

Still, I'd go to a locksmith, get a key made for $1.25 on an all metal blank.
