Lifter tick? and other problems
I own a 2001 S40 with over 100k miles on it. Recently the check engine light along with the tranny warning light came on. I waited over night and then turned the car over the next morning to find that the tranny warning had gone but that the check engine light was still on. So I took it to a friend who works at advanced and tried to get the codes pulled which didn't work. The code puller turned on but said it wasn't hooked to the car but it obviously was. He said the noise could be lifter tick. I am not so sure because I am a novice at working on my own cars and I am attempting to learn and willing to learn. The ticking noise seems to be loudest on the passenger side of the engine. I was wondering what other problems could give off a ticking noise. The noise seems to get louder as the car increases its rpms. Any ideas will be of help seeing as I do not know much about cars. Also the check engine light is till on. Thanks.
I would say its a belt... just cause 100k is time for the belt to get serviced and its on the passenger side .... also it would make a similar noise if bad.......
Id wait for others to jump on this topic cause im a novice also

I used to own a 2000 S40, same ticking even after belt change, not saying it isn't it though. I was told on these engines have very loud injectors, so I just chalked it up to that. The check engine light, I believe, will not go away until you physically clear it.
you have to get your cel codes read to find out...as far as the ticking it could be a number of things, If i were you I would have an independent mechanic that you trust or a local stealership take a look, has any tuneups been done on it?
