MAF Sensor / Air Filter Box Questions
We bought the ’00 S40 a few months ago @ 59k miles. It is a Volvo Certified Pre-Owned car & is in really good shape.
The only issues (besides the brakes) *knock on wood* are the MAF sensor keeps dislodging itself from the air filter box. On the sensor, and on the box, appear to be provisions for two clips of some sort - should there be clips to hold the MAF sensor in place? See the portion of the picture circled in yellow.
The other is the air filter box foot is broken nearest the passenger side rear portion of the battery (circled in red). It appears to be held in place by a rivet (at one point, anyway). Has this happened to anyone else? I plan to fab a new mount for it.
Should these two issues not be the cause of the MAF sensor popping out of the air filter box, what would?
The symptoms include a rough idle at a stop & dying. The first time it did it, it left a code (something about mass air flow insufficient, or something – I don’t remember) - the second & last time, it idled rough, died, and did not leave a code (mentioned as an FYI for those w/ similar issues).
Thanks!

hey man, yeah that is your problem the MAF controls the amount of air coming in, it cant read it so that is why it is dying. the clips should go on the underside of the clip i think and it will snap into place for the rivits on the lower box mount it is a rubber piece down there so just cram the thing into it
Sorry for the late response - fixed it a while ago. Turns out to be a pair of simple screws & washers. I was a little confused as the Alldata diagrams made it look like it was retained by clips, and the MAF sensor appeared to have provisions for clips.
Made me feel a little stupid...
