Is my S40 Turbo Charged?
Hello everyone,
I recently got a 2001 S40 from my parents that is in excellent condition with 75,000 miles. They purchased this when they lived in England with some special deal for ex-patriots who were coming back to America. It was shipped from the factory to Florida where they now live. They told me it was a turbo and when I put it on my insurance the agent said it was a turbo. Honestly, I don't see a turbo, hear a turbo or feel a turbo. How can I be sure it really is a turbo?
Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for the quick reply gilber33! My wife has the car and is out of town for the next couple of days so I won't be able to look at the back or the intake until then. I do remember when I called my insurance agent she had me go out to the car and read the number off the back and said it was a turbo so I'm guessing it really is... but will post back when I can verify.
On a side note, this car has been maintained by the local Volvo dealership and they have used synthetic oil from the beginning. I plan on changing the oil myself... any recommendations on oil and filter?

the only s40 in the us for that year was a 1.9L turbo.
the fram filters are ok, i personaly use the mahn filters. you will notice on that engine that it is not a normal style oil filter. it is a plstic cap (good quality) with a filter element on the inside of it. when you buy the new filter you get a new o-ring for the cap. MAKE SURE you replace the o-ring, even if you think it looks good. and then just make sure you get the cap seated all the way.

Thanks 850Tony, where do I get that o-ring... any parts store?
I am pretty sure this is a european model since they bought it in England but the steering wheel is on the left since it was being sent to the US... they ordered it before it was built. I will have more info when the car is back in a couple of days... now that I know what to look for.

OK... my wife came home last night. The back says 1.9T and when I popped the hood I could see a hose going from the air filter box down where it was hard to see but it looked like it was going to the exhaust down behind the engine. At first I thought the big metal pipe coming over the engine was something to do with the turbo but it looked like it went to the radiator and said something about the AC... what the heck is that?

TURBO = WIN!!
The pipe:

Does it look like that?
Crappy pic, but the only one I could find...

If it is a reverse mount intercooler pipe is that a good thing or bad thing?

There is a large heat sheild on the firewall that looks something like an aluminum turkey pan on my girlfriend's 2003 s40, that was my only clue that it had a turbo. The turbo itself is difficult to see when looking into the engine compartment, its buried way down in the back.
