Need help stat!!!!
Hi all! I didnt know where else to turn so I am hoping a Volvo forum will help or at least give me some advice.
I own a 2001 Volvo S40. It now has 136k miles. I'm gonna make a very long story as short as possible..
Back in 2006 at roughly 79k miles my cat.converter went and fortunately it was under warranty so I went to a volvo dealership and got it replaced.roughly 2 weeks after my check engine light went on and I was unable to pass Mass. state inspection due to diagnostic codes c1 and c2 misfires, catalyst system belwo threshold bank and some other things. went back to Farrell Volvo, explained situation and asked to get another converter and they basically said that what was happening had nothing to do with what they did and they would have to charge me. well they changed my plugs and wires and charged me for that and testing my car and sent me on my way. over the next 4 years and multiple mechanics , I have had my plugs and wires changed a total of 3 more times and noone seemed to no what the heck is wrong with my car. I am always unable to pass inspection so I go to a mechanic, they change my plugs and wires and as long as I go get my car inspected LITERALLY within 48 hours after then I pass. But then my check engine light goes on and we start all over again! The same diagnostic problems have been happening for about the past 50k miles, conveniently those are the miles I have put on my car since I visited Farrell Volvo to get my cat conv. replaced. WELL I finally found a mechanic who took the time to go thru ALL my receipts (thank God I kept them) and work orders and suggests I go back to Farrell and demand my car fixed because all the problems seem to be converter related! Here are all the codes that are wrong with my car:
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON
PO507-IDLE AIR CONTROL SYSTEM RPM HIGHER THAN EXPECTED
PO128-COOLANT TEMP BELOWTHRESHOLD TEMP.
PO420 CATALYST SYSTEM BELOW THRESHOLD BANK 1 SENSOR 1.
PO130 O2 SENSOR BANK 1 SENSOR 1 MALFUNCTION
PO303- CYLINDER #3 MISFIRE.
PO455 LARGE EVAP LEAK DETECTED.
Most of these codes have been present for, like I said above, about 50k miles. Because I have put so much work into this car I have had to refinance it twice so now I am so very overfinanced and trading it in is NOT an option. And for me to go to Farrell Volvo 4 years later I dont know that I will get anywhere. Is my converter even under warranty for that long? I am at my wits end! To fix all this is gonna cost me almost what the car is worth??!! I need some serious help and has anyone out there had this same problem???? HEELLPP!!

i would start with PO303- CYLINDER #3 MISFIRE, that is an indication that your coil pack is going or has gone bad...I would fix the coil pack and see if that will resolve some of your other issues your having! follow this link for your coil pack: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...ier=329981_0_0_
by starting here you might get rid of some of the other codes, it's the cheapest way to start!! good luck and keep up posted
also with the PO128-COOLANT TEMP BELOWTHRESHOLD TEMP almost sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, while I can't be certain as I have never seen this code this would be my guess....look at your dash board and see where the needle for your temp gauge falls if it is not in the middle then yes your thermostat is stuck open and not allowing your coolant to get hotter. keep us posted on your progress and I am sure someone else will come along and address your other issues!

Start with the replacement of both O2 sensors.Especially the first one which is located on top of the Converter is the one which mainly responsible for most of your troubles.
PO130 O2 SENSOR BANK 1 SENSOR 1 MALFUNCTION
It means this sensor is dead got to be replaced.
PO128-COOLANT TEMP BELOW THRESHOLD TEMP
Replace the thermostat and if your coolant never been replaced then that as well.
PO455 LARGE EVAP LEAK DETECTED
This could be as simple as you didnt tighten the gas cap well or it doesnt seal check it out.

Top O2 sensor, thermostat, 2 coils, gas cap loose. I feel you have been taken advantage of by unscrupulous shops.
