Default New member: Looking into buying a s40

Hello all,

I am in the market for a s40 and I wanted to check with the enthusiasts who know them best before I do.

I found a nice looking 2006 s40 T5 AWD. With 160k miles for $3500.

My questions are is there any reliability differences between the AWD T5 models compared to the 2.4l FWD models.

A friend of mine has a 2.4l FWD and has been reliable for him so far.

Also is 160k a lot of miles for a Volvo? How high of miles have you guys seen these cars go up to.

Thanks for reading.

dunno how high - my 850T is 200K+ and still counting... When buying a high mileage car, be diligent about repair history and do a full inspection... #1 is when is the timing belt due? what does the ATF fluid look/smell like? Does it idle smoothly? Does the AC blow cold after running all out for a while? Do all features work as expected? Does is drive/ride right? Are you prepared to do your own maintenance for a 10 year old car (parts are easy to find, most problems are easy to diagnose but may not be cheap to fix)?

I am pretty good with cars and I can do a lot of the work myself if it needs anything. Im used to cars that have very little technology running the car. Going into a volvo will be different for me. I am going to check the car out tomorrow morning

My 2005 T5 AWD is going strong at 130k+. So far it has been 100% more reliable than my 2001 S40.

Do you ever have electrical issues? Ive heard they are "bad computer on 4 wheels" from a online review source. any experience with that?

Voltage is very critical to this car for sure. A good battery and alternator and good clean cables are needed. I haven't had an issue with mine so far. I've read of others with issues when replacing the OEM Volvo alternator with an aftermarket reman unit. Just be aware that there is a huge difference between the 2000-2004 models and the 2004.5 and up models. The 2004.5 models are under Ford ownership and are completely different cars. Also, the 2006 does not have a way to connect an iPhone or similar. The 2007 with premium sound system, I believe, is the first year with this feature.

My only issue electrically so far has been a blown fuse which caused the interior lights to act strange. Replacing the fuse fixed the issue.

Default My S40 is for sale

Hello!

I'm a new member as well. I've got my 2006 S40 2.4i for sale if you're interested. It's in excellent condition with only 71k miles. I've loved every second of owning this car I just now need an SUV! I'm asking $6,000 for it. The only bad things are, it needs two new rear tires and the moonroof headliner has fallen off. Oil changed every 5k, all maintenance up to date. I got a front-end alignment done on Monday (5-2-2016)
