New to this forum, and need some advice... My wife and I just bought a 2010 S40. Me being being a guy who like's his cars to have more of a sporty stance was hoping to drop it an inch without losing the stock feel. I'm not looking to stiffen the ride just like a sporty look. Any opinions on which springs to buy, or can I get thinner spring pads, etc? I'm an AMG guy, and no nothing about Volvo... This is my wife's car and I don't want to get yelled at after I tinker with it... Ha!
Personally I think spacing the tires out to the edges of the fenders (where they belong, IMHO) makes for a more sporty look than lowering does, and it also doesn't cause secondary problems (like ripping the front spoiler off on average curbs, or funky amounts of negative camber). Doesn't hurt the ride a bit and actually helps the handling.
BTW, nice look! I'm assuming you used the spacers on your V50? I was actually trying to get her into a V50 because she does catering, and thought the extra room would help, but she chose the S40.
Thanks. Yes, I went with spacers. I started out with 32mm on the rear, but that put the wheels out a bit too far (the slightly larger tires - with wheels from a 2017 V60 - would hit the fenderwells on big bumps when I had the car loaded). I swapped them with 25mm, and it's much better. I only went with 5mm in the front. The lugs were a tiny bit short for my comfort, but I swapped the lug nuts with some that were threaded down further (the Volvo lug nuts have a 5mm (?) unthreaded portion at the bottom).
I also installed a set of camber-adjustment upper control arm bolts, because the car had a little too much negative camber for my tastes.
And yeah, I'm a "wagon guy" - always loved the look of a wagon set up "just right"...
