newb ? here: Want HIDs in my 02 S40 but have some concerns
Hello all, just joined the forum today and looking forward to becoming a volvo owner, as I know, they are great cars. I just inherited an 02 s40 from a family members passing.
The first thing I would like to do is install HIDs in my s40, as I have done so in all my other cars. However, there are some issues that I am not sure of.
1. the running lights that stay on during the day. I know if these are considered "daytime running lights" a lower voltage is supplied than when used as regular lights at night. This would ruin the HID kit rather quickly.
If the running lights are, in fact, the same voltage/light output then the HIDs will work fine and I dont mind if they run during the day.
2. if possible, how do you disconnect the day time running light feature.
3. any other little tricks I would need to know to install HIDs in my 02 S40 would be greatly appreciated.
thank you, and look forward to hearing from you all,
mark

Don't know about the voltage, but in my early 2004 S40 you can turn off the DRL feature--see your manual on how to do it. That's the first thing I did after buying the car in October! No sense burning lights all the time!
To turn off the DRL, make sure the headlight switch is set to on (12 o'clock position) then pull the high beam stalk and keep holding it while you turn the headlight switch off to 0 (9 o'clock). This will turn off the DRL.
Edit: they are the same voltage. I run mine all day but turned the DRL to off anyway in case I ever want to have my headlights off. I just keep them in the on position all the time since they shut off with the car.

For those with HIDs or wanting HIDs should consider installing projectors
