Hi just bought a volvo s40 1.8 se 1998
just after advice on it please....the cam or tappits are noise can they be adjusted

The tappets can be replaced if they are worn. If you end up replacing the cam, replace the tappets at the same time.

You need to find out if you have Hydrolic or Solid lifters.

I thought that all the S40/V40 series (petrol) engines had hydraulic tappets.

For a couple of years they installed Solid that need to be adjusted every 100,000 miles.

Hydrolic cannot be adjusted. You might have low oil pressure,Sludge in the engine, Or really old oil in there, Or also weak oil pan o-rings.
