Default odometer reading inaccurately?

Hey All,
I am looking at buying a 2003 S40 1.9T, and the odometer says 285k on it. guy says it's innaccurate and actual count is 153k. I know odometer issues were common with the older *00 models but since this is digital I wasn't sure. Is there a known issue with these? Or is this guy blowing smoke?

thanks

Thanks!! Apparently, There was a new engine (rebuilt/reman I assume) installed in the car about 6 months ago, shortly before this gentleman bought it. The inconsistency is attributed to that. Still trying to confirm. The car looks to be in excellent condition, and I can't imagine that it has that many miles on it for what condition it is.

Here is the listing:

I did test drive and inspect the vehicle, as well as take it to a mechanic that has done some work for me before. The mechanic gave it a pretty clean bill of health. There's some minor seeping at the valve and cam gaskets, rear struts are worn, and that's about it. Drove like a dream, super smooth with some powerful acceleration and good stopping power. If it wasn't for the odometer issue I'd have already bought it.

Ask for a carfax report. If the car changed hands, got dealer service etc each date and mileage will show up on the report. Not guaranteed but a clue none the less. Not sure how installing a new engine will mess with the data... A dealer may be able to read the data with a VIDA?

Are you saying you would be perfectly fine with 285k miles? If so then it's not an issue. If you would not be fine with those miles then walk away. Or if you would like to buy a bridge I can show you a nice one. Sure it's mine. Would I lie to you?

Ha! No, I am not ok with those kind of miles, that's why I'm trying to verify his explanation of the mileage inaccuracy. Although your point is taken, think I might move on...
