I have recently developed a serious oil leak from the passenger side of my 2001 s40,it looks like its just above the oil cooler somewhere behind the intake .
Is there anything else there it could be other than the head gasket.
I might have to remove the intake for a better look.
thanks for any insight to this problem im having as the car is now un driveable due to the severity of the leak

 

look around the VVT to see if its leaking down - also look to see if your PCV hoses are intact. I'd start by popping off the spark plug covers and the timing belt cover to look around then the lower valence under the engine . You may need to clean off the engine to see where fresh oil is coming out (including the oil lines and seals going to the cooler). I probably wouldn't suspect the the head gasket unless there were other symptoms like coolant loss, compression loss, oil or HCs in the coolant etc. Have you tested for positive PCV pressure? A clogged PCV can turn an engine into a bleeder..

 

I replaced cooler seals thinking that was the problem.
But now that I looked closer it's coming from the top.

What's coming out looks like it's kind of frothy maybe mixing with coolant.
When it's idleing and I take oil filler cap off oil splatters out some.
Maybe some possitive pressure.
Vvt is new changed it when I did timing belt.
I'll look at it though

 

If I did have clogged pcv what are the seals that could leak.

 

usually it pushes out cam seals to start, but it can push or crack hoses in the PCV system. to test for the pcv, remove the oil fill cap and put a latex glove ie surgeons glove over the hole and start the car. if it inflates your PCV is clogged which requires the intake to come off to repair. if it pulls in or puffs in and out, your PCV is ok. Do take the time to pop off the timing belt cover too - if the cam seals or the VVT gear leak it will wet the timing belt and that's a concern since its an interference engine and a failed belt means a valve job.

 

I'll look more closely at the things mentioned and check back later thanks for everyone's help.
What I think I'm seeing is the oil leaking out along the block,if I'm looking behind the intake
next to upper radiator hose.
I've gotta bend it put of the way a little to see.

now that I have the head off and I'm looking at the gasket I really don't see any damage to the head gasket.

I did have positive pressure from the PCV system I will be replacing that also.

also can somebody recommend me a brand or a kit with everything to replace the gaskets I don't really care if the seals for the valves are there or not I'm not replacing those

 

So I've started cleaning my cylinder head with a scotch bright pad lightly,and I'm seeing a few pits here and there.
If you zoom in on the picture you might be able to see them.
Should I be worried about them .
I hadn't planned on having the head machined.
My gaskets should be here next week.

 

Well my head gasket is in cam cover on and sealed. Just put A new timing belt,old one got soiled. Here is pica if anyone is interested. Tomorrow I'll probably unlock the cams.
It got a little confusing, when I went to put idler roller on.
Just behind where it bolts up there's threaded hole .
Must be for another style application because pulley covers it.

 

Got everything put back together pretty good had an oil leak coming from the oil return tube on the turbo be careful guys when you put your exhaust manifold back on

if you pry on it too much to get it to go over the top of the studs that you might pop out and you might not notice it until you go to start it up and have an oily mess everywhere that's how I found out

 

Hopefully I can get some help on this.
All went well with Head gasket etc.
Except when I come to a stop somewhere and idle I get smoke out the exhaust.
I think I should have done valve seals
I would have this happen occasionally at a stop .
Before head gasket, now it's a regular thing.
What do you think.

 

Color of the smoke? Smell? If it's oil you should have oil fouled spark plugs fairly quickly.

 

Gray smoke. Definitely oil I smell it.
Haven't checked plugs yet.
Can valve stem seals be done with the head on.?

 

Ok finally got to check out the spark plugs and they look new (I replaced old ones when I did Head gasket).

 

I took the rubber hose in this picture off and I have oil inside it and I see oil down in turbo.
Could this oil be coming from anywhere else other than a leaky turbo seal.

 

My turbo oil return tube is bent and didn't fit right into oil pan side with O ring.
I gooped it with ultra black.
And still have a leak there.
I'm going to order a new tube and see if that helps.

 

Another update.
Got the drain tube ordered from Volvo
Should pick it up Friday.
My o ring also.
I'm going to try to not disturb the gasket.

 

Ok hoping for a little insight.
I put in turbo drain tube no leaks there now, however still smoking out tailpipe when coming to a stop. Also if I take oil fill cap off while running,

I almost immediately I see blue smoke out the exhaust,and from somewhere under the turbo.
It almost looks like it comes from flywheel area.
Changed oil and filter too.
Cleaned ptc nipple, I'm at a loss.
Maybe my oil trap hose are backwards?

 

All 4 cylinders. Dry Cold. Might look around so I didn't want to warm.up engine.
